When 100-Amp Service Isn’t Enough: Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

A lot of older homes in Northwest Arkansas were built with 100-amp electrical service, and at the time, that was plenty. The trouble is that a home built in the 1980s was not designed around central air running all summer, an electric water heater, a houseful of electronics, and now maybe an EV charger or a hot tub on top of all that. The panel that was generous in 1985 can be stretched thin today.

How to tell your panel is stretched

A few signs point to a service that cannot comfortably carry the load it is being asked to handle. Breakers that trip when several big appliances run at once. Lights that dim when the AC or the dryer kicks on. A panel that has no open slots left, so there is nowhere to add a circuit. And the simplest tell of all: you want to add something, an EV charger, a generator, a workshop, a hot tub, and there is no room on the panel for it.

None of these means the panel is dangerous on its own. They mean the panel is full. The distinction matters because the fix is not a repair; it is more capacity.

What a panel upgrade actually is

A service upgrade replaces your existing panel and the service equipment feeding it with a higher-capacity panel, most commonly moving from 100-amp to 200-amp service. That roughly doubles the electrical capacity coming into the home and gives you both the headroom to run everything at once and the open breaker slots to add new circuits going forward.

It is a meaningful job. It involves the utility connection, the meter, the panel itself, and the grounding, and it requires a permit and an inspection. It is not a weekend project or a DIY task, and it is not one to hand to whoever is cheapest. It is the backbone of the home’s entire electrical system.

Why does the panel question come up with almost everything
